Abie from Hive of Craftivity will teach you how to make beautiful flower themed papercut decorations. You will explore papercutting in a total new and exciting way using the revolutionary Gyro-Cut® Pro tool.

Abie is the owner of Hive of Craftivity. After 20 years successfully teaching in Primary Schools, Abie’s business now allows her to follow her lifelong passion of crafting. Abie simply adores crafting and wants to help others discover this love too. Crafting is good for you, on so many levels!

Abie teaches a range of sociable craft workshops, Masterclasses, family craft sessions, events and parties across the West Midlands. Her promise is that once you try one of her workshops, you’ll be equipped with all the skills to practice and experiment at home.

VIP: Macrame Dragonfly With Mark Vardy From Pinflair/ Silvar Design- Friday 13:00, 14.00, 15.00

Learn a simple macramé knot and make this fun macramé dragonfly. The dragonfly can be used in a variety of crafty ways, attach to greetings cards, add to a bag charm, etc. A key ring fitting will be included to complete your dragonfly. The workshop will use a jig, which can be optionally purchased.

Mark Vardy

Mark Vardy has a passion for jewellery making. He has a level 3 NCFE certificate in craft and is a qualified adult education teacher.  Mark founded Silvar Design in 2004, teaching a vast array of techniques, and he covers everything from costume jewellery design, macramé and kumihimo braiding through to stringing techniques, enamelling on copper and silver jewellery. More recently Silvar Design has partnered with Pinflair Creative Crafts.

MONOPRINTING USING GEL PLATES with Hannah Blowes – Submerge Art – 15.15

Explore a variety of Gel Plate Printing techniques (with Hannah from Submerge Art). Experiment with layering colour and texture using plants, stamps, stencils and household items onto paper and fabric. 

Gel Plate printing is simple and fun without the need for a printing press or for any carving or drawing skills. The reward is immediate and each print is truly unique. 

By the end of the workshop, participants should feel confident enough to use and experiment with the gel plate printmaking technique in their own environments.

This workshop is suitable for children over the age of 12 with parental supervision.

Hannah Blowes

Hannah Blowes creates hand carved and hand printed lino printed artworks and develops educational printing kits and equipment in her workshop near Bude in Cornwall.

Hannah trained as a Theatre/Film Designer and then later spent 15 years teaching Art & Design in secondary schools where it was magical to inspire students with a love of creativity and skill based learning. She still really enjoys teaching printmaking techniques and runs workshops throughout the year.

Come and play with the exciting iron-on interfacing Decovil 1 light. Learn how amazingly versatile this clever product is. Layer up torn papers, transfer foil and paint to create a fabulous little envelope bag.

Kim Thittichai

Kim has been writing and delivering various courses and workshops for the past 30 years, having regularly taught in the UK and Europe as well Australia, New Zealand and India.

By far her most popular course is Experimental Textiles, and she is very excited to be teaching this again at the show.

Because of the popularity of her teaching, Kim was commissioned to write four books on her experimental textile techniques: Hot Textiles, Experimental Textiles, Layered Textiles, and Reclaimed Textiles.

Now settled in Ireland Kim explores the sights, sounds, peace and tranquillity through her work, which she say’s, “is salve for the soul.”

CATHEDRAL WINDOWS COLLAGE with Maria Thomas – 15.15

Create a mini patchwork collage with vintage and recycled materials using the simple folding method of Cathedral windows. Expand your creativity whilst reusing found materials in a playful mixed-media way. Make a unique sampler that you can grow into a work of art.

Maria Thomas

Maria studied Embroidery at Manchester Polytechnic during the1990’s. Along side teaching textiles and embroidery for over 30 years, she has designed freelance for fashion, exhibited regularly and has work in public and private collections in the UK and overseas. Her work is about her life with her family, using patchwork and quilting to shape her memories she likes to draw with found objects and recycled materials. Her home and studio are in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

BOXY ZIPPED POUCH with Adam Burch, aka Adam Sews – 11.15

In this fun workshop, Adam will show you how to create a fabulous boxy pouch using 10-inch squares of fabric; this is a great way of using up left over layer cake squares from other projects to create versatile pouches for storing all your crafty tools.

Adam Burch, aka Adam Sews

Adam is a Bagmaker and Quilter, his main focus is bags made from quilted foam, giving structure to the final makes. He designs and writes his own Patterns. He also has a love for quilting and incorporates quilting into most of his designs. Adam will be demonstrating his quilted bag making skills in his workshops.

BUTTERCUP FAIRY YARN DOLL with Michelle Goodfield, Thimble Wood – 15.45

Join Michelle Goodfield from Thimble Wood to create a charming yarn flower fairy doll. You will learn the very simple process of creating a basic doll from yarn using a wooden bead for a head. Then learn how to modernise this traditional crafty make by dressing your doll with a stitched felt Buttercup outfit including a pretty petaled overskirt, wings, hat and boots.

You will be provided with all the materials to make your doll and will aim to complete the main doll and dress in the session, with full directions given for you to finish off the wings, hat and boots at home.

Suitable for ages 14 and over, all abilities welcome. Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Michelle Goodfield

A lifelong crafter, Michelle has been lucky enough to work in the craft industry for 30 years, initially designing rubber stamps, then writing articles on card making. This led to a career in craft publishing, writing 12 craft books and hundreds of magazine articles. It was always Michelle’s dream to start her own business and so Thimble Wood was born four years ago where Michelle gets to design the things that she likes to make; small projects, something a bit different, sometimes quirky, often cute (even though they weren’t really intend to be) and always great fun to make. Michelle loves to make up her own techniques and find the easiest way to do things!

NEEDLE FELTED SEWING MOUSE with Steffi Stern, The Makerss – 09.45

Learn how to needle felt this cute poseable mouse by just using pipe cleaners, super-fast felting wool and felting needles. This project is another adorable addition to The Makerss famous mouse collection and you will get the little sewing machine as part of the kit.

Steffi will teach you techniques and tricks how to wrap wire and sculpt with wool, and add surface features and accessories just by using a felting needle. Steffi’s style is supportive, encouraging and fun filled.

Take your little mouse home together with an Eco wool felting mat, felting needles and full colour step-by-step instructions. The finished size is about 6-8cm tall.

Steffi Stern

German born Steffi Stern is a craft enthusiast and has been crafting for as long as she can remember. In 2010 Steffi turned her passion into her profession when she opened her first craft shop in Gloucestershire.

Fast forward to today and she now runs the successful craft business The Makerss. She has written four books on needle felting and doll making. Steffi loves combining her business experience with her passion of crafting and helping others to realise their creativity. Steffi’s teaching style is supportive, encouraging and fun filled.

INTRODUCTION TO PUNCH NEEDLE with Kim Searle, Darn It! Workshops – 13.45

Create your own punch needle artwork using a wide variety of different colours and textures. Experiment with four different types of punch needle tool and three different types of fabric. You’ll leave with all the skills you need to punch like a pro and troubleshoot your own punch needle projects.

Kim Searle

Kim graduated from the University of Huddersfield BA Textile Crafts in 2012 after specialising in Printmaking with an emphasis on creative work within communities. Since leaving university she’s worked on various projects with a common vein of passing on creative skills and using creativity as a way to build up community, support positive mental health and bring people a lot of joy. She works under the name of Darn It! Workshops, primarily delivering creative workshops across the country, creative sessions in galleries, community groups, festivals, events, creative spaces and more. Kim recognises that everyone learns differently and adapts teaching styles to the individual, tries to only work with venues that are accessible, offers low-income options and strongly believes in the benefits of creativity for mental health. She also co-runs Thread Republic, a Textile Scrap Store and Sustainable Textile CIC based in Huddersfield.

SAPPHIRE MOON SILVER PENDANT with Tracey Spurgin – 11.45

Join Tracey Spurgin, International Metal Clay Artist, as she takes you step-by-step through the process of creating an adorable and stunning pendant using Art Clay Silver. You will have a choice of designs as illustrated. You will get to grips with all the essential foundation skills and proudly walk away with your finished creation. The workshop fee includes silver clay and the sapphire-coloured gemstone but does not include the jump ring and chain.

Advisory Note:

Aimed at the complete beginner, but this class is not suitable for children under the age of 16 due to the nature of the tools used to make the pendant.

Tracey Spurgin

Tracey Spurgin is a qualified Senior Art Clay instructor having completed courses with Artclay World UK. She has trained to the highest level with some of the world’s leading metal clay artists & tutors. With more than 20 years’ experience, Tracey teaches in her own studio in East Yorkshire as well as travelling extensively in the UK and internationally to deliver courses, workshops and master classes in colleges, museums, galleries and shops. She has also been a guest designer on Jewellery Maker TV.

Tracey loves to challenge herself and work on projects that she considers to be almost engineering in clay. Hinges and lockets and threaded vessels are something that fascinate her. So she will spend days, weeks and months on troubleshooting problems and ideas until she finds a solution. She is passionate about sharing her discoveries and the joy of metal clay.
